Free Hold’em Tournaments
Apart from using the fact that playing hold’em online does not include the risk of losing real money, major online poker room websites also offer other “poker” features as a means to entice new players. One usual feature is a free hold’em tournament. Free hold’em tournaments are often called satellites by which winners gain (usually, free) entry to real-life hold’em tournaments in casinos.
And don’t get the idea that this feature benefits only the hosting website. From simple advertising options, free hold’em online tournaments have become real money making methods for individuals. There are indeed people who won in free hold’em tournaments online who became successful in real-life poker tournaments too. For instance, it was through a free online poker tournament that Chris Moneymaker won his entry to the 2003 World Series of Poker. His win in the main event caused a big shock in the whole poker world. The year after, probably due to the influence that Moneymaker brought, the World Series had featured three times as many “online” players as in the past years. At least four players in the WSOP final table, believe it or not, won their entry to the tournament through an online cardroom. And to top it all of, the 2004 winner Greg Raymer also won his entry at an online cardroom like Moneymaker.
